Memorial Weekend

Whew! So I have officially been here 1 week!  I've done so much though and have met so many people I feel like I've been here for 1 month already!  Memorial weekend has made the Vineyard a different place!  MV has been extremely low-key, casual, nothing like MV is stereotyped to be.  During this touristy weekend, I've realized the visitors are what make MV "preppy."  The streets are now PACKED, with people and with cars.  Instead of seeing guys at the bar with tshirts and jeans, you see guys with blazers, yes blazers, Lacoste socks and Polo sweaters and khaki or madras shorts.  Instead of seeing girls in jackets, sweaters, and jeans, they are now dressed like it's 90º outside in their "grove" dresses.  It's quite different and interesting. They bring a different character to the town.  I'm glad I got to see the before and after!  Supposedly the touristy season dips back down and comes back in mid-June.

On Friday, to kick off the Memorial Weekend, the kids from Edgartown School walked down Main St, where my store is, and they carried flowers down to the harbor and threw them in the water in remembrance of the soldiers.  I thought that was neat to see.

Yesterday morning I was awoken with a banging on the door.  Out of my 3 other "roommates" I happened to be the only one up.  I opened the door and it was a cop.  Awesome.  He was asking my name and my roommates names and the names of the guys in our house and everything-- ha freak me out. After a while of questioning the shoes on the floor and our recent whereabouts, it turned out that the Dairy Queen next to us got robbed!!!  Ha, robbed of an ice cream cone that is... Apparently a young guy broke into the DQ late that night, tried to make an ice cream cone, but instead the machine broke and got all over his pants, so he walked out disappointed.  A cop owns that DQ so they've made this case a big deal; it's kinda funny they don't have much else to do.

So the two boys living with us may have found a house today! Yay!  I really like them- they're great- but we have to make room for two new roommates! Callie, being one of them, who will get here in about week.  But also one of our friends, Amanda, may move in with us as well and live in our basement!  It's a really clean and nice basement, but I think she'll have to fix it up a lot to make it livable.  We'll see what happens.

Liz and I hardly see each other because we have opposite schedules.  She doesn't go to work until 4 (gets off around 12 or so) and I'm at work from abut 10-6 or 8 or something like that.  Work has been great.  My feet hurt so bad though!  Yesterday I was so tired so during my break I walked down to Mcphail's.  It's this cozy cafe near the harbor, and I heard they have the best cookies, and being the little cookie monster I am, I had to check it out.  So I bought a big ole choc chip cookie and a coffee and sat inside (where is was warm, unlike outside) in this big comfy chair and caught up on my MV Times.  It was a cute little place.   Then I went back to work for the last 2 or 3 hours.  Nancy has put me in charge of opening and closing the store sometimes, so I've been closing lately by myself.  I feel like it's sort of a big responsibility so I'm of course so nervous I'll do something wrong!  I've come to really enjoy closing though.  The  shopping crowds dwindle and it quiets down.  I put on some Frank Sinatra, Swiffer the floor, and finish the closing procedures.  It's quite relaxing.  After that all I wanna do is run home, sit on the couch and prop my feet up for a second.  Today was my day off so that is pretty much ALL I did today.  I WANT IT TO GET WARM SO I CAN GO TO THE BEACH.  I DON'T LIKE THIS COLD WEATHER IN THE SUMMER!

Last night I met two friends, Ashley and Amanda, at one of my favorite restaurants called Atria.  It was so great.  I think I've already written about it, but here I go again... It's so homey, with dark wood, a fireplace, big booths, and just an overall comfortable atmosphere.  I got there late of course, and Ashley and Amanda were there and they had a glass of wine waiting for me..A nice way to end a long day.  Really nice "big band" type music was being played by two men and it absolutely completed the mood.  We ordered appetizers, too.  I ordered Island Greens, which was a salad with blueberries, hazelnuts, and blue cheese.  It was so good.  Then, we ordered desserts...Lemon cake with vanilla ice cream, blueberries and raspberries--delicious. And also, Frozen Green Yogurt with honey and blueberries--it was so refreshing.  And because you end up knowing everyone in town, we happen to know the manager, Nathan, and the desserts were on him.  That's always a nice surprise.   After dinner we walked down to the Wharf.  My name now is apparently Mississippi, at least that's what a few people call me.  The bar was full of preppy tourists and a horrible, but bc they're so horrible they're good, 80's band.

Because Atria is my favorite place, I'm happy to say that I'm going there again tonight  :)  with Ashley and Amanda again!  It's 1/2 price burger night, so it's a pretty good deal.  Atria is on the way to town so afterwards we'll probably go to the Wharf again.  Repeat.
Today was cloudy and chilly.  Where is the warm sunshine?!  Where are my warm clothes? :(
