Day 1 Islanders

Yesterday was great.  Liz and I started the day off with a wonderful breakfast at the Harbor View in Edgartown.  We walked there and just outside of the resort area is the lighthouse, which I think is just so cool..--so of course I took a bazillion pictures.  Gotta love being a tourist.  Embrace it, I say.  The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice and clean with pink gerber daisies (my favorite) on each table.  Built in 1891, overlooking Martha’s Vineyard’s Edgartown Lighthouse, Edgartown Harbor and Chappaquiddick Island, the hotel is flanked by historic homes from 19th Century whaling captains.”  The almost even better thing about this nice restaurant, is that we got our breakfast for FREE!  Liz just happened have connections... Following breakfast,  we decided to tour the island so I could get a feel for it.  Thank goodness Liz has her car here!  So then, we drove to a popular beach called SOUTH BEACH.  David Letterman has a house out there and frequently rides his bike or jogs.  The beach was really cold today.  Last week, a dead whale washed ashore on this beach.  The sand felt so good between my toes. So from there we drove to OAK BLUFFS.  Oak Bluffs is a tad bit different-- it’s very diverse...and all of the houses there are Victorian style, which makes it unique. After walking around there and window shopping, we traveled onward to VINEYARD HAVEN aka Tisbury.  Which is my second favorite town to Edgartown. (ha yes, I’m already forming opinions).  It’s so cute and quaint with really great stores. Some people find it inconvenient at times though because it’s a “dry” town, as is the case in all but two of the island towns. We went into one really cool store co-owned by Carly Simon, the “Your So Vain” star.  Her store is called Midnight Farm, and it’s sort of like Anthropologie-- check it out @ http://www.midnightfarm.net.  After strolling around Vineyard Haven, Liz and I drove back to Edgartown.   We have two adirondack type chairs on our porch so we at outside on our porch for hours and watched the cars and bikes ride by.  It was so relaxing.

THEN Liz and I walked into town because she had to go to work.  I decided to drop into the store I’ll be working at called Zinnias. The line of clothes we sell is called Fresh Produce.  It’s targeted toward older women I think but it’s actually really cute.  And the store is cute, too!  We also sell Barefoot Contessa products, Tea Forte products, cute sandals, chocolate covered sunflower seeds, and jewelry.  So I learned a little about the store, and I start work Monday!

I walked back, went to the Stop & Shop, and finally got unpacked!  Then one of our friends, Angela, had to babysit and she had cooked dinner, so free dinner = we’re there.  So we went to this house and ate dinner, hung out with the cutest kid, Peter, and played with their cats.  Overall, it was a wonderful day! I LOVE the Vineyard already.

PS.  Right now the Vineyard is full of islanders (people who live here).  As you can imagine, they are different from Mississippians.  I’m not exactly sure how, but I’ll be able to explain it later I’m sure.  And apparently, this is the island of Never Never Land where people never grown up.  Also there are a ton of foreigners/Europeans here-- from Scotland, Russia, Brazil, Europe, Germany, etc.  So it’s just all really interesting.
