Hello long lost blog...
It's been a crazy past few weeks! It's pretty much been parents week. We call it Parents Week MV '09. Mrs. Mounger was here, the Duffy's were here, my mom was here, and Mr. Mounger was here- all at different times but some also at the same time. It was so fun though! I already know the Moungers but it was still great to hang out with them. And I met the Duffys for the first time and absolutely love them, too! Mary Duffy, Liz's sister is coming Wednesday. Liz's birthday is Saturday...not sure what we're doing yet, but I'll be sure to report on the big celebration.
The weather right now is 60º and raining... bummer. The bike ride home from work today was sooo miserable. It is extremely windy, misty, and chilly. Not good combinations. Work was super slow today... 9:30-5:30.. exhausted. But I get tomorrow and Wednesday off, so yay! I REALLY REALLY want it to be sunny but fat chance.. Nancy said that if it rains on both of my days off then she'll reschedule so I can have a sunny day off.. so so nice.
Let's see... So my mom came in town last week and we had a great time! It was SO good to see her! It was weird bc I felt like hadn't seen her in about a year! It was one of the longest times I've gone without seeing my sweet mom. So I picked her up from the ferry and we met the Duffys and Callie @ Atria for dinner. It was so lovely. I know she was exhausted though bc she had been traveling for about 13 or so hours! But she smiled as always and toughed it out... Dinner was amazing as always. That night we went home and crashed...
The time my mom was here, we did more things in about 4 days than the whole time I've been here! It was great. --We went to breakfast at Among the Flowers... had good coffee, granola, and a delicious omelet... Mom must have brought all the good weather with her, and then took it back home with her as well, bc while she was here it was beautiful! Nancy let us borrow her car the whole day. We drove ALL over the island... from Edgartown, to Katama, West Tisbury, Chilmark, Menemsha, Aquinnah, to the Gayhead cliffs, then back through to North Tisbury, Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, then back to Edgartown AND that covers the island! It was so awesome. We started off the morning by going to the farmer's market in West Tisbury--the first one of the season, and bc it was the first i was a lot of greens and flowers and baked goods and some crafts, but not so much fruit and summer food. But that was neat and we bought some blueberry muffins for our drive. (the next day in the same location we went to an artisan market, which was really cool, too). We then drove through Chilmark. (the drive, these roads are beautiful--winding, green, etc.) While there, we went to Chilmark Chocolates--ah! so good.... We got there at the perfect time, too. We got all sorts of things, I can hardly remember..choc covered raisins, nuts..peanut-butter and choc. white choc. with almonds and cranberries, hazelnut and choc... so much more but I can't remember but it was so delicious!!
Then we headed to Gayhead where the cliffs are... it was so crowded so we didnt get out to walk around plus it cost like $20 dollars to park but what we saw was beautiful! Then we drove to Chilmark Pottery--mom INSISTED on going! but I am VERY glad we did! He makes BEAUTIFUL pottery, it was so so exquisite.. We got 2 mugs and 2 bowls... I wish I could get everyone a piece of it!
Then we went o Vineyard Haven and walked around the shops there.. so cute. Mom really liked it too. A good place to live if you lived here (we think).
Then we went to Oak Bluffs, and mom also INSISTED that we go see the Oldest Carousel in America! I must admit it was pretty cool... I guess. :)
Then back to Edgartown we were. We walked around, she met everrryyyyyone and everyone now misses her.. haha. We got some yummy ice-cream from Scoops... Coffee Oreo and Black Cherry.. ohhhhh so good...
One morning we went to Vineyard Haven for breakfast. We ate at a local place called Art Cliff. We pull up and I was stuck in the parking lot bc it was so packed... As we sat there a woman looks at us and says go to hell... haha and guess what kind of fan she was... LSU. I forgot that Liz's front car tag says "hotty toddy." anyway... THEN I find myself staring at this girl who strangely looks like Ellen Pompeo and guess what... IT WAS! Ha she then buried her head in her sweats... so then we finally park somewhere and we walk in and end up sitting right in front of Ellen and her husband. It was so weird. Like I reschedule my Thursdays to watch Grey's Anatomy, run to my couch, to see what Dr. Grey is up to, and there she was right next to me, just chillin in her sweats.. it was just weird to see her in person. She looks the exact same though! Plane Jane, but cute. And she was pregnant and precious. So tiny with her big ole bulge. So, so far, that has been my celebrity sighting. But...Callie saw Mike Myers a few days ago.
On our last day, Mom and I biked in Chappaquiddick. It was really pretty. All the houses are tucked in so we didn't see many but the ride was pretty. We rode out to one of the beaches and walked around there and it was pretty. Then we continued to ride but the road eventually turned into sand and we kept falling off our bikes haha sooo we turned around. We went back to Edgartown and again got some ice cream.
One night we watched Jaws and it was so cool because it was filmed in Edgartown and about nothing has changed, so it was neat to see the scenery of where I am! A few people I now know, like Geno, are in it. One guy, Bob Carroll, who used to own the Habor View, who actually helped Ted Kennedy get off of the island when Teddy had his whole incident, was in the movie has well.
Mom's last night we laid low, and we went to the Black Dog Café in Vineyard Haven. It was fun and good to just hang out and talk. I hated to see her go the next day.
anna - your road trip around the island just took me on a little mental trip also. you just have learned all of the islands secrets and i am just loving it. EVERY single place you went to were some of my favorites on the island... you have no idea!!! i just smile to myself every time i read something you've written - can we PLEASE take a trip there together? i am not even kidding. you will have to come over when we get back to oxford and we can just talk and talk and talk about MV - bc you know you will have withdrawals when you leave, and NOONE understands the depth of the withdrawals.
